Coronation Beach

Coronation Beach

Western Australia

Coronation Beach is one of Western Australia''s premier wave sailing spots, located about 50 km north of Geraldton along the Indian Ocean coast. The spot is exposed to open ocean swell and benefits from the powerful and reliable sea breeze that Western Australia is famous for. It''s a remote, raw, and world-class location — regularly featured in wave sailing media.

Best wind: The dominant wind is the southerly sea breeze (known locally as the "Geraldton doctor"), blowing cross-offshore from the left. It typically builds from midday and peaks in the afternoon, averaging 20–30 knots in the season. The cross-offshore angle creates clean, well-shaped waves ideal for port-tack wave riding — a setup that attracts wave sailors from around the world.

Best season: October to March (Australian summer). The sea breeze is most consistent from November through February. Outside this window, the wind becomes less reliable and the swell drops.

Waves: The spot picks up consistent Indian Ocean groundswell. On good days, the waves are head-high to mast-high, breaking over a shallow reef shelf. The main break offers long, clean walls perfect for bottom turns and top turns. Inside sections can get shallow — reef booties are strongly recommended.

Rigging & launch: The beach is wide and sandy, making rigging easy. Launch is straightforward over the sand into a channel. The walk back upwind after a session can be long depending on how far downwind you drift. There are no facilities at the beach — bring everything you need (water, food, shade).

Parking: Free, unpaved parking right at the beach. 4WD is not required but the access road is unsealed and can be rough after rain.

Hazards: Shallow reef on the inside — wipeouts near the break can be punishing. The spot is remote with no mobile signal, so always sail with someone else. Sharks are present in the area — locals generally accept the risk, but it''s worth being aware. Strong currents can push you downwind quickly.

Level: Advanced. This is not a beginner-friendly spot. Solid wave sailing skills and experience with reef breaks are essential. Intermediate sailors can enjoy the flatter water inside the reef on lighter days.
